Carrera Kraken Mountain Bike - 16", 18", 20", 22" Frames is rated out of 5 by 29.Rated 5 out of 5 by 420Rider from Brilliant entry level/progressive level bike!! I don't know what it is about the kraken but I absolutely love it.. me and my mate both have one. I have the older blue white and red edition and he has the new one (all white). At first we purchased these bikes to ride some local roads and just get out the house but we then later found out that there was local mountain bike trails an hour down the road and decided to go. At first we never knew how our carrera krakens would hold up on tough terrain and hash tracks for it being what most people would call an inexpensive bike... My friend spent £450 on his brand new. I spent £250 on mine second hand.. we have now been at the tracks 5/6 times for the full day and not one of us have had 1 single issue with our Krakens. We even flew past people on the red trails who had full suspension mountain bikes worth £2000-£5000. I don't know what had them more bewildered.. the fact we had cheap bikes or the fact we had no helmets ... sure a full susser would have been smoother over the rocky areas but I prefer the hardtail style riding. It really makes you work for that control and seems to give off more of an adrenaline kick when hitting those steeps. Its all preference. Some people like a bit of rumble, others don't. The kraken has taught me that its all about the rider. The kraken is more than capable of those harsh mountain tracks and trails if you are confident and skilled enough on a bike. I think this may be the case for all bikes as I spend more time on the trails. For a hardtail it rides pretty smooth and can also reach brilliant speeds downhill with insane control. For £450 this bike is an absolute steal brand new and I don't think you can really find another hardtail under £1000 any better... The front forks work absolute wonders, the breaks are reliable and quick, the gear switches are insanely quiet and smooth... I even like the exaggerated width on the handlebars. At first I thought this may be a downfall getting in between tree's on the technical trails but it just added to the over all control of the bike, especially on the fast rocky areas.. The overall build is just really snazzy as well. I find it comfortable, smart looking, sporty, fast yet some how still bulky enough to feel worth more than £500. The squared off frame looks really nice as well from the riders view as well... Remember that if you're buying a bike to go smash MTB trails that your most likely going to end up with a few bumps and bruises along the way. It's inescapable even with invisi coat protection on your bike. Allow that to be even more justification to scrap paying a fortune for a high spec bike that you won't want to scrape and just go ahead and buy a kraken! If it cost 450 brand new.. what exactly could you break on it that would be expensive to replace?? its a no brainer.... Its durable. I'm practically in love with this bike at the moment. I will no doubt end up buying the new one when it comes out... Point is, Don't listen to anyone saying these bikes can't do what a 2 grand bike can do. Yes they can, I've personally seen them do better on the trails. 2 years ago i personally had a DiamondBack Mountain Racer worth £1500 and it could never match this bike in a million years. yes there is some cheap parts on the kraken but hey... they've not caused me any issues and I ride my bike pretty hard into the ground before getting it serviced. I would be really interested if Carrera moved onto a full suspension bike of similar spec.... I really can't find any downfalls with this bike. 10/10 for this.Date published: 2018-07-08Rated 5 out of 5 by Willy56 from Great bike Good bike, reasonably priced, bit fiddly to put together with No tools, i.e spanner, Allen key, handle bars could have been in a fixed position, wee things like that would help a novice build a bike upDate published: 2018-04-14Rated 1 out of 5 by Bertski from Back wheel problems Had this bike 12 months now was happy till back wheel started too make ecesive noise from freewheel hubDate published: 2018-01-10Rated 1 out of 5 by blaze1234 from unbelivable! i brought this bike about 5-6 weeks ago at a price of £450.00 and was brought to commute to and from work which is 3 miles away from home down muddy tracks, the reasoning behind buying such an expensive bike was because of the terrain I cover to and from work and now after using it several times I had buckled the back wheel so badly that Halfords (Evesham) was asking for £50.00 for a new wheel! bearing in mind I have 2 other (cheaper) Carrera's (vengeance) (Vulcan) and these go down the same track every day aswel and these have not had a single problem! not worth £450 when I am now considering buying some heavy duty wheels around £200 which when paying such an expensive price for the bike and it cant even cover a little 3 mile track and back! annoyed is an understatement! very disappointed in this product!Date published: 2017-11-12Rated 4 out of 5 by Gimp12 from Good value bike for urban riding and light off road This bike is great value for money. It has good suspension forks for its price - the steerer size is 1.1/8. The bike has hydraulic brakes with are a huge pro. It is a durable bike and is fantastic for urban environments, good for everyday use and getting around. Wouldn't use it for actual mountain biking though.Date published: 2017-10-08Rated 5 out of 5 by Chris2017 from This is a great bike After having an accident at work and was in a wheel chair for a few years, i thought i would try and get some exercise and rebuild my leg muscles by cycling. I brought the carrera kracken expecting to do a few miles around town etc, but i loved it so much i ended up doing 30-40 miles a night on it. The carrera kracken is so smooth to ride, all the gears changed smooth and it was a pleasure to ride. I could not fault the bike and i would defiently recommend this. The only trouble i had was when my bike went in for the 6 week service at halfords. The front gears was not adjusted correctly and jammed as i was riding along next to a bus and fell off, nearly getting run over. I took it back to a different halfords store (rayleigh) who sorted it with no problems. So my point is that the bike is a brilliant bike but i would recommend a proper bike shop look over it before hand, espically when they had my bike ready for collection and had the front suspension forks around the wrong way.Date published: 2017-09-08Rated 5 out of 5 by GrahamHaz from Got a bargain Love the bike handling, gears , hydraulic disc brakes are amazing , collected it boxed 20" frame in white , put together in a few hours with new SPDs from Halfords , got it with 20% then a ffurther 10% £324 , great spec for this moneyDate published: 2017-08-20Rated 5 out of 5 by Aker010 from Carrera kraken 2017 WOW!
