R129 child car seat safety standard guide
When it comes to child travel, every parent wants peace of mind that they’re choosing the safest car seat for their little one.
ECE R129 is the latest EU/UK safety standard for child car seats, and we’ve partnered with car seat experts Joie to explain what R129 means and how it helps keep children safer on the road.
In this article, Joie helped us answer your most frequently asked questions, including:
- What is the R129 regulation?
- What’s the difference between R129 and i-Size?
- Can I still buy R44 car seats?
- What type of R129 car seats can I buy?
What is the R129 regulation?
ECE R129 was first introduced in 2013 as the new safety standard for child car seats.
It focuses on selecting a seat based on your child’s height, which makes it easier for parents to understand when their child is ready to move to the next stage. Car seats still have a maximum weight capacity, but height is the primary indicator for choosing and using an R129 seat.
R129 also encourages children to travel rear‑facing for longer, up to a minimum of 15 months and at least 75cm in height, as research shows this gives their neck and spine more time to develop before forward‑facing travel.
In addition, R129 seats undergo more advanced testing than previous standards, including:
- Side‑impact testing
- Q‑dummy crash tests using 32 sensors for more detailed safety data
What is the difference between R129 and i‑Size?
R129 and i‑Size are closely related but not identical.
- R129 is the overall safety standard.
- i‑Size is a category within R129 that focuses on compatibility with ISOFIX anchor points and vehicle‑specific fit.
All i‑Size seats meet R129 requirements, but not all R129 seats are i‑Size. Many i‑Size seats include an “i” in the product name or display the i‑Size logo.
Can I still buy R44 car seats?
R129 is now the primary approved testing standard for new car seats in the EU/UK.
Retailers and manufacturers are transitioning fully to R129‑approved seats, and this standard will continue to guide all new product development.
Consumers can continue to use any legally purchased car seat that meets the required safety standards at the time of purchase.
What types of R129 car seats can I buy?
