Everything you need to know about child car seats

Babies seem to grow so quickly, it probably feels like you only have to blink and it's time for bigger clothes, new shoes and even a new car seat.

Once you know it's time to take the next step to keep your little one comfy in the car, there's still the task of finding the best car seat for you both. We've rounded up some top tips and advice for you to help make the whole thing a little easier so your family can be back enjoying the open road in safety and comfort.

Where to start

Child car seats are designed for children from around 15 to 36kg. When you start looking around, you'll notice that car seats are separated into Groups, typically based on the approximate weight of a child. The exception is an i-Size seat which uses a child's height to determine which seat is best.

These car seats can be secured in your car using a seatbelt or ISOFIX base, and help protect your little one if you're involved in a collision.

All of our car seats here at Halfords are made to meet ECE or i-Size safety standards, so you can rest assured that your baby will be able to travel in safety and comfort.

Car seat safety

This should be the last seat you have to buy as car seat law outlines that children need to travel in an appropriate sized seat until they're 12 years old or 135cm in height, whichever comes first. Some models are adaptable to be used as booster seats as your child grows. Most booster car seats will either be in Group 2/3 (15-36kg) or Group 3 (22-36kg).

Booster cushions and seats

There are two main types of booster seats available: backless booster cushions, which are lighter, and high back booster car seats, which offer more security and support.

A high back booster car seat will give a better level of side impact protection in the event of an accident, and the height adjustment ensures that the seatbelt is fitted correctly over the child. Booster cushions do come with a clip that allows seatbelt adjustment but this is not as easy to fit and position. The headrests on a high back booster car seat will also help to keep the child safely in the seat if they do fall asleep.

What to look for

  • Seat fitting - does the seat attach using the seatbelt or ISOFIX?
  • Convenience - how easy is it to secure the seat and child in place?
  • Reclining mechanism and padding - is your baby in for a comfortable sleep as well as being able to look around when they're awake?
  • Side impact protection - do you have peace of mind your little one has added protection?
  • Removable covers - is it important to you that if there's a little accident, you'll be able to take the covers and pop them in the wash?
