Bike Pedals Buyer's Guide
The pedals on your bike help you get the energy produced by your legs down onto the road, so it's important that you pick the right ones.
Pedals are generally split into two types: standard flat pedals or clip-on pedals.
Flat Pedals
Flat pedals are generally favoured by casual riders. Some cyclists feel more comfortable with them as you can take your feet off whenever you like. A flat pedal is a more traditional pedal, used by casual riders, and doesn’t require specialist shoes to be used.
Halfords Comfort Pedals
A good example of a flat pedal is the Halfords Comfort Pedals. These pedals have a strong steel axle and fit most adult bikes and junior bikes with 9/16" axle threads. The rubber grip reduces vibration through the pedals whilst providing extra grip. The aluminium body and steel axle prevent damage to the pedals if the bike is dropped on its side.
Mountain Bike Flat Pedals
For mountain bikes, there are specific off-road pedals with pins to help you grip the pedal. A tip for any cyclists using flats is to use the ball of your foot to power yourself along. This is the most efficient way to get the most power output.
DMR V11 Pedals
Available in seven unique colours, the DMR V11 Pedals are perfect for those who venture off the beaten track on a mountain or gravel bike. The V11’s durable glass-reinforced nylon body features eleven replaceable steel pins on each side for rock-solid grip. All pins are secured with captive locknuts for ultimate durability. Outer pins are Vault Moto pins that sink deep into your shoe, keeping your foot well and truly planted
Clip-in bike pedals
There are two different types of clip-in pedals: two-bolt and three-bolt systems.
Clip-in pedals work as a part of a two-part system alongside cycling shoes that feature cleats in the soles. Cleats slide into the pedals, allowing riders to stay fully connected to the bike at all times.
Two-bolt system
A two-bolt cleat system, more commonly known as Shimano SPD, is typically used on a mountain or gravel bike. The two-bolt fixed attachment style provides a fixed point for better performance.
Shimano PD-ED500 Light Action SPD Pedals
The Shimano PD-ED500 Light Action SPD Pedals are a reliable entry-level SPD for cycling enthusiasts. They feature a multi-directional release system, making regular cycling stops even easier. The sealed-bearing cartridge axle keeps water and debris out, meaning you’ll be spending more time in the saddle and less time cleaning.
Three-bolt system
A three-bolt system, or an SPD-SL, is designed for road cycling and some indoor cycling applications and is typically larger than a two-bolt cleat.
Halfords Clip-in Road Pedals - Keo Compatible
The Halfords Clip-in Road Pedals are lightweight, KEO compatible, and made from carbon fibre and nylon for a sleek look. These pedals are a perfect choice for those looking to try out clip-in shoes without breaking the bank. They feature a tension gauge, which makes inserting and removing your foot easy.
Benefits of clip-in pedals:
- Improved power output – When your foot is securely locked into the pedal, you’re able to pull up as well as push down, creating a more efficient, smoother pedalling motion.
- Increased control – With your feet fixed to the pedals, you have more control, which is particularly beneficial when riding on technical or bumpy terrain.
- No foot slipping – Your feet are far less likely to slip off the pedal, reducing wasted energy or an accident.
- Better hill climbing - The ability to pull up on the pedals makes climbing easier and more efficient.
Clipping in and out of pedals can be hard if you haven’t done it previously. Follow these simple steps to click into your pedals:
- Align your cleats - position the cleats on the bottom of your cycling shoes to the pedal clips.
- Start pedalling - as you pedal, push down on the front of your cleat to engage it with the pedal.
- Secure the back of the cleat - as you continue to pedal, push down on the back of the cleat to secure it in place.
To release, simply twist your ankle outward and carefully remove your foot. Some pedals feature adjustable tension, allowing for easier clipping in and out during practice.
Try clipping in and out a few times while leaning against something, or cycle on a soft surface such as grass so that your fall is cushioned if you don’t manage to get them out in time and don’t forget to practice both feet.
