Halfords Bike Xchange: Buying a Second-Hand E-Bike

If you’re looking to buy a second-hand e-bike through the Halfords Bike Xchange scheme, then it’s important to understand what the different grading levels mean and how the condition of the e-bike influences the level of discount we can offer.

Grading levels

The grading rating list and the criteria for each grade are shown below. These ratings aren’t definitive, so we’d always recommend that you inspect your e-bike when you collect it to make sure that you’re happy with the condition before you complete your purchase.

Grade A

  • E-bike has done less than 100 miles
  • E-bike has none or minor cosmetic and/or mechanical wear from light use
  • E-bike has most of its original parts and may have had some of its minor parts replaced

Grade B

  • E-bike has done less than 500 miles
  • E-bike may have slight cosmetic and/or mechanical wear, and may show signs of light use
  • E-bike has most of its original parts and may have had some of its minor parts replaced

Grade C

  • E-bike has done less than 1000 miles
  • E-bike may have some cosmetic and/or mechanical wear from use
  • E-bike may have had some of its original parts replaced

*Please Note: Certain brands/bike models are unable to be graded by their mileage due to the system they use not capturing this information, these bikes are graded on cosmetic condition.

Some of our 2nd hand e-bikes will have new controller units fitted. Therefore, the Odometer will state zero mileage. The bike will be graded based on the mileage taken from the old controller.

Safety Checks

All our second-hand e-bikes are safety checked by one of our expert e-bike technicians before being fully restored and repaired to ensure they’re safe to ride away on the same day you collect.

They check the wheels, frame, saddle, drivetrain, handlebars, motor, controller, display, charger, and battery, and ensure there is no water damage, structural damage, modifications, or any dampening of the battery compartment.

Your warranty includes all electrical components; battery, motor, controller and ECU as well as frame, saddle, drivetrain, handlebars and wheels. Areas that are not covered are If there is excessive wear and tear and where components fail due to misuse, a lack of servicing and / or a lack of care.
