Wireless Charging Guide

As our devices get smarter and hold more of our lives, keeping them charged has never been more important. Nobody wants to be stuck with a dead phone, especially as they help us to pay for things, navigate and stay connected.

Wireless charging is now very common, making charging simpler and more convenient. Instead of dealing with messy cables, you just place your device on a wireless charging pad, and it powers up automatically with no plugs needed.

What does “Qi-Compatible” mean?

You might see products labelled as Qi-compatible. Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the industry standard word for wireless charging, covering smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices like smartwatches.

If a product is Qi-compatible, it can be charged wirelessly using a Qi-enabled charger rather than, or as well as a standard cable.

Most modern wireless chargers use this standard, so it’s usually a safe bet for compatibility to look out for this feature.

Can all devices be charged wirelessly?

Not quite. Only certain devices have wireless charging built in:

  • Apple: iPhone 8 and later
  • Samsung: Galaxy S6 and later
  • Other brands: Many other new Android phones support Qi, but check your device specifications

Older phones may require a wireless charging receiver or adaptor, but most phones sold in the last few years have Qi built in.

Does your car support wireless charging?

Wireless charging in cars depends on the model, not just the age. Many new vehicles include charging pads in the centre console or near the gear stick.

Brands leading the way include Toyota, Honda, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, and Volvo. Check your owner’s manual or ask your dealer to confirm if your car has built-in wireless charging.

What if your car doesn’t have wireless charging?

If your car doesn’t have wireless charging already built into the car's centre console, you can add a universal wireless charger. These come in several styles, so you can choose one that fits your car and phone:

Charging Pockets

Hidden charging compartments that hold your phone securely while driving. Many include extra USB ports for charging additional devices, for example, the Connects2 Universal In-Car Charging Pocket.

  • Fits in glove boxes, armrests, or side panels
  • Spring-loaded mechanism holds your phone firmly

Car-Specific Chargers

Integrated chargers directly replace parts like your coin tray for a seamless look. Usually cheaper than dealer-fitted options and look like part of your car.

Mounted Chargers

Mounted chargers are adjustable and compatible with most Qi devices.

If you prefer your phone visible for navigation or hands-free apps, mounted chargers attach to the dashboard or windshield and hold your device securely, like the MagicMOUNT Qi Wireless Charge that attaches to your cars dashboard. Or, if you’re looking for something smaller and more discreet, the Halfords Advanced Wireless Charging Vent Phone Holder attaches to your cars air vent.

Tips for choosing the right wireless charger

  1. Check your device compatibility—most modern phones are Qi-compatible.
  2. Consider your car layout—flat pads need space, pockets need a flat surface.
  3. Look for extra USB ports if you need to charge more than one device.
  4. Professional installation can help if you want a clean, integrated look. Services like weFit can fit most kits for a small fee.

Wireless charging makes life easier, whether you’re at home, in the office, or on the road. Check your car and device, pick the right style, and you’ll never have to worry about battery life again.
